POSITION TITLE: Shelter Manager

REPORTS TO: Director of Operations

POSITION SUMMARY: The Shelter Manager is responsible for the quality of care, timely flow, and the emotional and physical health of the companion animals in our care. The manager oversees all customer service-related aspects of shelter operations and supporting programs to ensure a professional, consistent, and courteous customer experience, develops and manages innovative adoption programs and maintains a welcoming environment for all guests. The Shelter Manager will manage animal admissions and outcomes in balance with capacity to provide care at established standards.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Work collaboratively within all levels of the organization and across departments to cultivate a positive culture and team approach to fulfilling MCSPCA’s mission
  • Ensures intakes, adoptions, and client/visitor interactions are conducted free from bias and judgement and that all people are treated with empathy and respect
  • Supervise, support and develop personnel to meet or exceed established performance standards.
  • Conduct introductory period and annual reviews of personnel to provide feedback and identify areas for growth
  • Ensure excellent communication among Shelter staff and interdepartmentally by maintaining communications systems, protocols, and tools
  • Ensure daily assignments are distributed equally to provide adequate customer service and animal care, including coverage for vacations, absences and lunch breaks
  • Ensure all public and animal areas are safe, clean, well maintained and welcoming
  • Address all customer questions, concerns and complaints in a timely manner
  • Responsible for the retail area, including merchandise inventory, ordering, and pricing items for resale
  • Ensure the accurate completion of end of day cash out procedures, reconciliation, cash handling and deposit preparation
  • Responsible for ensuring consistent use of the Shelter software and verifying the accuracy of the information in it
  • Follow best practices to prevent the exposure or spread of communicable diseases among the animal population and ensure all animal care staff are trained and following documented standard operating procedures
  • Coordinate with Clinic and Behavior staff to ensure the general health of all animals, including the implementation of current vaccination and health protocols, behavior assessments and modifications, cleaning protocols, and enrichment
  • Prepare statistical reports as requested, ensure monthly submission of Shelter Animals Count data and quarterly state submissions are completed
  • Remain knowledgeable and in compliance with MCSPCA Personnel Guidelines, applicable State and Federal laws and MCSPCA policies, procedures and programs
  • Support programs and activities of MCSPCA as requested

EXPERIENCE/ATTRIBUTES DESIRED:

  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively
  • Minimum five years of experience in managing teams, animal shelter environment preferred
  • Excellent interpersonal and supervisory skills
  • Experience in staff development and mentorship
  • Proven verbal and written communications skills
  • Strong organizational, planning, and critical thinking skills
  • Possess a positive attitude, empathy and ability to manage multiple priorities
  • Takes initiative and employs creative problem-solving tactics
  • Animal handling skills required

POSITION TITLE: Behavior and Training Coordinator

REPORTS TO: Shelter Manager

POSITION SUMMARY: The Behavior and Training Coordinator oversees and ensures the behavioral health of the animals under the care of the MCSPCA and takes a lead role in determining a pathway forward for animals with behavior concerns. The coordinator participates in admissions decisions, evaluations, enrichment, training and adoption counselling.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Work collaboratively within all levels of the organization and across departments to cultivate a positive culture and team approach to fulfilling MCSPCA’s mission
  • Support the animal admissions process by assessing pets for intake
  • Be knowledgeable of animals in inventory and monitor existing and new behavior concerns
  • Complete behavior evaluation assessments and recommendations for addressing any known and noted concerns
  • Design and implement enrichment and training plans for sheltered animals including hands-on training to improve adoptability through basic obedience, behavior modification, daily exercise and socialization
  • Identify placement options for animals including adoption, rescue, and foster; determine if not placeable following Organizational policies
  • Attend weekly population management meetings to ensure pathways for animals are identified and actively managed in coordination with animal care and veterinary team members
  • Provide support and training for staff and volunteers to ensure safe and proper animal handling and successful implementation of training and enrichment programs
  • Ensure all observations and evaluation notes are maintained in shelter management software
  • Assist recent adopters, fosters and community members with behavioral concerns as appropriate
  • Remain knowledgeable and in compliance with MCSPCA Personnel Guidelines, applicable State and Federal laws and MCSPCA policies, procedures and programs
  • Support programs and activities of MCSPCA as requested

EXPERIENCE/ATTRIBUTES DESIRED:

  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively
  • Experience in an animal shelter setting
  • Experience working with clients in private and group settings
  • Certification in dog training (CPDT-KA preferred)
  • Previous customer service experience preferred
  • Proven ability to multitask and prioritize

POSITION TITLE: Clinic Manager

REPORTS TO: Chief Medical Officer

POSITION SUMMARY: The Clinic Manager is responsible for the daily operation of MCSPCA’s Veterinary Clinic and ensures compliance with all applicable regulations, policies and laws. The Clinic Manager maintains the clinic’s schedule, manages inventory, supports the Clinic’s veterinary team, supervises support staff and coordinates with program staff to meet the medical needs of MCSPCA’s animals and the animals of MCSPCA’s clients.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Work collaboratively within all levels of the organization and across departments to cultivate a positive culture and team approach to fulfilling MCSPCA’s mission
  • Assist in the development of policies and procedures as it relates to clinic operations
  • Provide daily leadership, direction, and supervision with hands on support to client service staff, veterinary assistants/technicians, veterinarians and volunteers
  • Maintain efficiency of clinic operations by optimum scheduling of shelter animals and clientele for clinical services
  • Manage the Clinic’s database and ensure complete medical records are kept on all clients and patients
  • Responsible for processing payments, client billing and following all MCSPCA accounting procedures
  • Manage medical supply inventories
  • Oversee and schedule equipment maintenance, repairs, and state licensing
  • Assist with scheduling of outside veterinary resources for procedures not available at MCSPCA’s clinic
  • Oversee humane care and treatment of public and shelter animals kenneled at the clinic
  • Facilitate and oversee vaccine clinics
  • Assist in the development of, and work within, an annual budget and fulfill all requirements of an annual audit
  • Remain knowledgeable and in compliance with MCSPCA Personnel Guidelines, applicable State and Federal laws and MCSPCA policies, procedures and programs
  • Support programs and activities of MCSPCA as requested

EXPERIENCE/ATTRIBUTES DESIRED:

  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in veterinary clinic procedures and regulations through any equivalent combination of education, training and experience
  • Experience working in a high volume spay/neuter clinic and at least two years in a supervisory and/or management position preferred
  • Must possess strong organizational, customer service, oral and written communication skills and be able to work effectively in a team environment with other veterinary professionals and staff

POSITION TITLE: Staff Veterinarian

REPORTS TO: Chief Operations Officer

POSITION SUMMARY: The Staff Veterinarian provides medical and surgical care for shelter pets, Trap-Neuter-Return cats, and pets of individual clients, spay/neuter clients and animal rescue groups and develops treatment protocols and SOPs.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Work collaboratively within all levels of the organization and across departments to cultivate a positive culture and team approach to fulfilling the MCSPCA mission
  • Responsible for enforcing and maintaining medical and surgical protocols and ensures MCSPCA compliance with all applicable state and federal requirements
  • Create and implement shelter SOPs as needed to ensure compliance with Association of Shelter Veterinarians best practices
  • Provide emergency and non-emergency medical and surgical treatment for patients of the MCSPCA clinics and shelters
  • Perform dental, orthopedic and soft tissue surgical procedures for clinic patients and shelter residents as needed
  • Perform spay/neuter surgeries on shelter and public animals, including pregnant animals
  • Provide diagnostics, treatment and follow-up care patients
  • Seek the scheduling of outside veterinary resources for procedures not available at MCSPCA
  • Perform or supervise humane euthanasia as required
  • Supervise veterinary support staff and clinic volunteers to ensure consistent high-quality care
  • Mentor and oversee Veterinary Technicians on animal examination techniques, medical protocols, surgical prep, anesthesia monitoring and recovery
  • Ensure medical records are complete and accurate in a timely manner
  • Communicate with owners and staff team members effectively and in a timely manner
  • Responsible for meeting DEA requirements and maintaining current licensure
  • Attend staff meetings as requested
  • Remain knowledgeable and in compliance with MCSPCA Personnel Guidelines, applicable State and Federal laws and MCSPCA policies, procedures and programs
  • Support programs and activities of MCSPCA as requested

EXPERIENCE/ATTRIBUTES DESIRED

  • Graduate of an accredited school of veterinary medicine or equivalent
  • Licensed to practice veterinary medicine in the state of Pennsylvania in good standing and must complete all professional requirements to maintain licensure
  • Enthusiasm for general surgery and shelter medicine
  • Ability to conduct high-volume, high-quality surgical sterilizations in a fast-paced environment
  • Possess or have the ability to obtain a DEA license
  • Basic computer literacy required
  • Proven organizational skills and effective communication
  • Possess a positive attitude, empathy and ability to manage multiple priorities
  • Demonstrate initiative and the capacity to think creatively

POSITION TITLE: Animal Care Technician (Perkiomenville)

Shift Type: Tues-Sat, 8am-5pm

POSITION SUMMARY: The Animal Care Technician provides for the daily care, safety and enrichment of animals housed at MCSPCA facilities, ensures all cleaning standards and protocols are met, and assists guests as needed.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Work collaboratively within all levels of the organization and across departments to cultivate a positive culture and team approach to fulfilling MCSPCA’s mission
  • Clean and maintain all animal housing areas following SOPs
  • General cleaning of facility including laundry, dishes, common areas
  • Feed, care, bathe, and medicate animals as needed
  • Perform incoming health evaluations for animals admitted into care, ensure intake vaccines are given and noted in the record
  • Notify leadership of sickness or injury of animal or person in the facility, needed supplies, faulty equipment, and inappropriate behavior of visitors or volunteers
  • Provide excellent customer service at all times including assisting guests with adoptions, intakes, reclaims, lost and found reports and questions in person and via telephone
  • Support and supervise volunteers on site and ensure safety of pets and people at the facility
  • Remain knowledgeable and in compliance with MCSPCA Personnel Guidelines, applicable State and Federal laws and MCSPCA policies, procedures and programs
  • Support programs and activities of MCSPCA as requested

EXPERIENCE/ATTRIBUTES DESIRED:

  • Experience in a direct animal care facility/animal handling
  • Ability to communicate in a positive proactive manner

POSITION TITLE: Animal Care Technician - 2nd Shift (Conshohocken)

REPORTS TO: Shelter Manager

Shift Type: Tues-Sat, 2pm-10pm

POSITION SUMMARY: The Animal Care Technician provides for the daily care, safety and enrichment of animals housed at MCSPCA facilities, ensures all cleaning standards and protocols are met, and assists guests as needed.

SPCA Locations


The Montgomery County SPCA has three locations in Southeastern Pennsylvania. We house lost, homeless, and unwanted pets in an effort to find them new homes or reunite them with their owners. All pets are kept safe and secure. They are provided loving care and treatment for any injuries or ailments until we are able to place them into a home.
