POSITION TITLE: Volunteer Coordinator
REPORTS TO: Community Engagement Manager
POSITION SUMMARY: The Volunteer Coordinator is responsible for recruiting, onboarding and retaining a volunteer and foster team sufficient to meet the ongoing needs of MCSPCA’s daily operations, critical programs and outreach activities in all locations.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Work collaboratively within all levels of the organization and across departments to cultivate a positive culture and team approach to fulfilling MCSPCA’s mission
- Actively recruit and supervise volunteers who will assist the staff and other volunteers with operations, services, programs, and events
- Actively recruit and train foster care providers
- Process applications in a timely manner and maintain database of volunteers and fosters, and a record of volunteer hours worked
- Ensure volunteers are oriented to MCSPCA, trained, supported and appreciated
- Establish descriptions of individual tasks that volunteers will perform, review with and train volunteers in collaboration with program team members as needed
- Match volunteer skills/desires with organizational needs; schedule volunteers for specific tasks/duties including events, program support, adoption center shifts, clinic support, and other tasks as requested
- Facilitate volunteer activities for corporate and youth groups
- Communicate regularly with volunteer corps to share information and updates
- Receive feedback, ideas and suggestions from volunteers and liaise with management team to enable program enhancements
- Serve as the liaison between volunteers, fosters, staff, and management to ensure a positive rapport is maintained
- Maintain the Volunteer and Foster Procedures Manual(s) and the online Volunteer Portal
- Monitor volunteer communications tools including Facebook and Slack.
- Remain knowledgeable and in compliance with MCSPCA Personnel Guidelines, applicable State and Federal laws and MCSPCA policies, procedures and programs
- Support programs and activities of MCSPCA as requested

POSITION TITLE: Veterinary Assistant
REPORTS TO: Lead Veterinary Technician
POSITION SUMMARY: Responsible for daily care of all surgical patients, assisting doctors and veterinary technicians with pre-, peri- and post-operative care of patients, general cleaning, and caring for shelter residents.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Work collaboratively within all levels of the organization and across departments to cultivate a positive culture and team approach to fulfilling MCSPCA’s mission
- Have knowledge and ability to intake and release patients, including delivering post-operative instructions in a competent and friendly manner
- Know basic veterinary medical concepts
- Follow all written and verbally communicated departmental standard operating procedures
- Responsible for prepping patients for surgery, observing all clinic procedures, to enforce sterility and safety of patients.
- General duties in the operating room during surgery, assisting with movement of patients, recovery of patients, and general flow.
- Able to monitor anesthesia, with a clear idea of abnormal conditions.
- Ensure prompt and accurate paperwork procedures are followed each day.
- Able to respond appropriately during an emergency, able to take directions from a veterinarian and/or veterinary technician and maintain competency in CPR procedures
- Following shelter medicine SOPs and best practices, monitor and support the health and well-being of animals in the shelter as requested.
- Remain knowledgeable and in compliance with MCSPCA Personnel Guidelines, applicable State and Federal laws and MCSPCA policies, procedures and programs.
- Support programs and activities of MCSPCA as requested.
ANIMAL HANDLING:
- Able to handle (on average) 30 dogs and cats per day
- Must be able to learn characteristics of animal behavior (for example: be able to identify aggressive or fearful behavior)
- Must be able to use appropriate safety equipment for fractious or feral animals (will train); the use of safety equipment is mandatory
- Must possess excellent reflexes
- Should be able to identify own limitations and be willing to ask for help
- Must become proficient at animal restraint for various procedures
EXPERIENCE/ATTRIBUTES DESIRED:
- Ability to read and write legibly in English and to communicate clearly both in person and over the telephone.
- Basic computer literacy, including typing, required. Experience with general office equipment and clinic software preferred.
- Minimum of one year working in a veterinary clinic. High volume veterinary and/or spay neuter clinic experience is preferred.
- Proven organizational skills and effective communication.
POSITION TITLE: Admissions and Foster Coordinator
REPORTS TO: Shelter Manager
POSITION SUMMARY: The Admissions and Foster Coordinator manages the flow of animals into and through the MCSPCA shelter system ensuring all needs and requirements are met in a timely fashion.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Work collaboratively within all levels of the organization and across departments to cultivate a positive culture and team approach to fulfilling the MCSPCA mission
- Coordinate animal admissions for all shelter locations by screening applications, discussing options and opportunities with owners, scheduling intake
- Ensure intake process is completed in a timely manner including vaccines, photographs and data entry into shelter software
- Schedule and coordinate animal evaluations to determine the most appropriate pathway for animals seeking admission as needed
- In collaboration with MCSPCA team members, identify animals who would benefit from foster placement and match them with available foster families
- Prepare animals for foster placement including food, supplies and medications to go with them
- Remain in contact with all active foster homes to ensure the health and wellbeing of pets, coordinate appointments with veterinary and/or behavior team members as needed
- Actively work with fosters and team members to promote pets in foster seeking adoptive homes
- Coordinate the flow of animals in and out of fosters and between MCSPCA adoption locations
- Ensure shelter database is up to date with accurate animal locations at all times
- Collaborate with Volunteer Manager to ensure foster recruitment, onboarding, training, appreciation and retention; ensure data is collected on foster activity
- Attend staff meetings as requested
- Remain knowledgeable and in compliance with MCSPCA Personnel Guidelines, applicable State and Federal laws and MCSPCA policies, procedures and programs
- Support programs and activities of MCSPCA as requested

POSITION TITLE: Staff Veterinarian
REPORTS TO: Chief Operations Officer
POSITION SUMMARY: The Staff Veterinarian provides medical and surgical care for shelter pets, Trap-Neuter-Return cats, and pets of individual clients, spay/neuter clients and animal rescue groups and develops treatment protocols and SOPs.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Work collaboratively within all levels of the organization and across departments to cultivate a positive culture and team approach to fulfilling the MCSPCA mission
- Responsible for enforcing and maintaining medical and surgical protocols and ensures MCSPCA compliance with all applicable state and federal requirements
- Create and implement shelter SOPs as needed to ensure compliance with Association of Shelter Veterinarians best practices
- Provide emergency and non-emergency medical and surgical treatment for patients of the MCSPCA clinics and shelters
- Perform dental, orthopedic and soft tissue surgical procedures for clinic patients and shelter residents as needed
- Perform spay/neuter surgeries on shelter and public animals, including pregnant animals
- Provide diagnostics, treatment and follow-up care patients
- Seek the scheduling of outside veterinary resources for procedures not available at MCSPCA
- Perform or supervise humane euthanasia as required
- Supervise veterinary support staff and clinic volunteers to ensure consistent high-quality care
- Mentor and oversee Veterinary Technicians on animal examination techniques, medical protocols, surgical prep, anesthesia monitoring and recovery
- Ensure medical records are complete and accurate in a timely manner
- Communicate with owners and staff team members effectively and in a timely manner
- Responsible for meeting DEA requirements and maintaining current licensure
- Attend staff meetings as requested
- Remain knowledgeable and in compliance with MCSPCA Personnel Guidelines, applicable State and Federal laws and MCSPCA policies, procedures and programs
- Support programs and activities of MCSPCA as requested
EXPERIENCE/ATTRIBUTES DESIRED
- Graduate of an accredited school of veterinary medicine or equivalent
- Licensed to practice veterinary medicine in the state of Pennsylvania in good standing and must complete all professional requirements to maintain licensure
- Enthusiasm for general surgery and shelter medicine
- Ability to conduct high-volume, high-quality surgical sterilizations in a fast-paced environment
- Possess or have the ability to obtain a DEA license
- Basic computer literacy required
- Proven organizational skills and effective communication
- Possess a positive attitude, empathy and ability to manage multiple priorities
- Demonstrate initiative and the capacity to think creatively
