A Six-Month Progress Report on Changes at the Montgomery County SPCA
May 22, 2025Until the Cows Come Home
The Montgomery County SPCA does much more than adoptions. Our humane work includes pets as well as livestock and other species.
We’ve all heard the saying “til the cows come home.” For the MCSPCA, it holds a special meaning.

A little more than a year ago, we received a substantiated complaint of animal neglect and cruelty involving a large herd of dairy cattle. After an extensive investigation, the MCSPCA team rescued the animals — and ultimately prosecuted the offenders.
Two individuals, a mother and son pair, were successfully prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. This included felony, misdemeanor, and summary charges. Fines were imposed, prohibition of ownership was granted, and both defendants are currently on probation.

Most importantly, the cattle were seized and awarded to the Montgomery County SPCA — marking a huge win for animals in Pennsylvania, as livestock cases are rarely prosecuted… let alone successfully.
Investigation, prosecution, rehabilitation, and sanctuary placement for cows were not easy tasks. We collaborated with local police, bovine veterinarians, farmers, and large animal rescues to meet the challenge together — for the good of some very needy and well-deserving cattle.

Today, we’re happy to report that these Holstein Heifers — once emaciated and sickly — are now living glorious lives at beautiful sanctuaries. They receive nothing but love, kindness, and all the best care possible, thanks to our friends at Long Leaf Animal Sanctuary, Poplar Spring Animal Sanctuary, Farm Sanctuary, and the Large Animal Protection Society.
These happy cows are home!

Stories like this show why MCSPCA will continue to fight for abused, neglected, and unwanted animals until others have safe homes, too.
Sincerely,

Tracie Graham, Interim Executive Director
